about

"Three Guys on a Hilltop," is a fanciful description of the events that supposedly took place on Golgotha many years ago. The instruments take on various roles, but most consistently the flute is Christ. The work opens with an angry Christ railing at his father for the untenable situation in which he has been placed. During the tirade we hear the falling tears of the angels, as represented by tuba and percussion, as they witness this ugly rift between father and son. These tears evolve into the famous storm that washed across the scene. We then hear the wailing of Mary and the various ladies in attendance. The following flute solo is one side of a conciliation conversation that Christ has with his father. Once things have calmed a bit, the "good thief," (tuba) initiates a dialog. This conversation is cut short as Christ gives up the ghost. Once Christ has entered the hereafter, he, his father and the angels perform a dance of ecstasy. The work requires considerable improvisation by all players, but particularly by the flautist.
