about

Wordsmith, Mark Weber, decided to give a concert in December of 2015. He also decided to have some musicians back his reading. Mark is an old hand at this. He wanted two woodwinds, two brass. I got the call. Michael Vlatkovich got the call. We've been shipmates from a long way back. For the woodwind chairs he called on Bill Payne and Richard Tabnik. Richard slipped a disc, so Bill had to hold the section down on his own. Michael and I had never met Bill. Who could know what would happen? Mark did. It worked. The concert, a set of poems on sleep, was a success. We performed in pajamas. All the music on that show, save one piece, was improvised.

This is a recording made while we were guests on Mark's jazz radio program on KUNM. It was our chance to perform together before the concert. As radio studios go, it was pretty roomy in there. That matters when a tuba is involved. We determined to do whatever we would do. That is, with the understanding that it was going straight out over the airwaves, so no bad words. Mark was kind enough to give us the aircheck. You can hear him giving the station ID's. It is always good to know where you are. We decided to name the group Area 51. Maybe because space is the place and we are stuck on earth. Maybe because Bill Payne lives in Las Vegas. I don't remember. No matter, here is our offering. Area 51 takes a zany romp through Albuquerque.

Recorded Dec. 15, 2005.
