about

The Lament of Absalom, was my first CD as a leader. I was in San Francisco with Wadada Leo Smith's N'Da Kulture. Francis Wong gave me a call and said he could set up a recording session, if I was interested. Of course, I'd do that. He picked me, we drove to the Upper Richmond. We did our thing - sit down and play. I think that was the first time I met Elliot. Cello and drums at the same time pretty much blew me away. The project was first released on CD in 1995 on the Asian Improv Records label. This digital release is a collaboration between Tomato Sage Consortium Records and Asian Improv Records.

Absalom, a bison of the plains. He lives at a time when there are few of his kind remaining. However, he is old enough to have seen the glory days of the great herds. He stands alone in the early hours of a fall evening, upon a butte, looking across the vast grasslands. Not even any of the red men are left. There was a time he was naive enough to think they were the worst enemy god could devise. How little we know of what is going on, he muses.
