about

Continuing the partnership between TSCR & AIR, we offer the re-release of Glenn Horiuchi's Elegy for Serajevo. Glenn, on piano, koto, shamisen, voice and percussion, leads a quartet of long-time collaborators Francis Wong on saxophone, clarinet, flute and voice, William Roper on tuba, ocarina and voice, and Joseph Mitchell on drums and percussion. We recorded at Glenn Nishida's Pacifica Studios (not to be confused with the radio network), like countless other L.A.-based musicians. I don't remember much about the session, other than knowing that it was going to be a long one. Francis reminds me that I brought and ate a can of cold Vienna sausages, gelatin and all, along with the obligatory Shou Wu Chih. Glenn tended toward long sessions, covering lots of music. There were scores that generally no one but Glenn had seen. Glenn never did a second take. It really didn't matter what the band members thought of the take. He'd listen to you, but to my memory he always moved on. He also didn't edit the tunes. You learn to concentrate when that is the process.

It is refreshing to revisit this recording. I hadn't heard it for years. It is from long enough ago that it sounds like a different us. You rarely get to hear Joseph Mitchell doing this, though those in the know know that he is good at it. Again, Francis had to remind me that we recorded enough material that session for two CDs. The other music is still on DAT. There are plans to bring that to the world in the not so distant future. For now, listen, ponder and enjoy Elegy for Serajevo. Music that is extremely relevant for this moment.

Originally released on Asian Improv Records as AIR 0035.
