Still Bill's Culinary Engineering, was a site-specific performance that took place on The Artship, in Oakland, CA, on Oct 5, 2002. The Artship, docked at the 10th Avenue Terminal in Oakland, was a 491-foot former Navy vessel converted into an art space. Hugh Livingston asked various musicians to create improvisations in an area of the ship of their choosing. The improvisations were recorded over a 52 week period. More than 50 3-inch CDs were released. This was #46 in the series.

The space I chose was the galley. My concept required two takes. First was the soundscape created with tuba and discovered/created sounds within the space. A galley has lots of smaller spaces and moving parts within - walk-in refrigerators and freezers, ovens, cabinets, drawers. The second take was an improvised cooking show, with special guest host, Hugh Livingston. (Hugh did not know that he was going to be part of the performance.) This was recorded right after the sound recording, but without reference to it. I brought a propane burner onboard, which was probably illegal, but we got away with it. The two recordings were exactly the same length and joined without editing. So really, it was three improvisations.

I don't remember if we ate the slumgullion. (Erroneously referred to as scumgullion on the recording.)
