about

"Poem for Emmett Till - A Freedom Song," Emmett's story takes place in mid-twentieth century America. His story is well known. Suffice it to say that he (a young black boy) was beaten by two white men. They admitted beating him. They say they didn't kill him. He did die. Black people, understandably, had some trouble with their behavior. Actually, a lot of all kinds of people had some trouble with this behavior.

The piece is presented to the performer in these episodes: 1. Emmett in the womb. 2. Emmett's birth. He hits the ground running, so to speak. 3. The world tells Emmett that life is not a bowl of cherries. 4. Emmett and his cousins stroll through town. 5. The conversation in the store. 6. The beating and the murder. 7. Emmett's ascension. 8. The cry of our mothers. Episodes 1 & 6 are totally improvised. Poem for Emmett Till was Written for cellist Erika Duke-Kirkpatrick, in 2000 at the Djerassi artist Residency Program.
